TRIZ:
TRIZ, pronounced Trees, is an acronym for the Russian equivalent for the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. It was invented by Genrich S. Altshuller, a Soviet Naval Patent Clerk after the Second World War. He was continually asked to help with solving problems which lead him to formulate a methodology for solving any crisis:
The solution must be logical, following a process or procedure to a specific resolution. The solution must start with the broad problem area and be directed to any of many small resolutions.
The solution needs to be repeatable and not affected by psychological inputs.
The total body of knowledge must be available to access and the solution will add to the body of knowledge.
The process needs to be available to all who need to follow it.
Since Altshuller postulated this theory, over 1,500,000 patents were examined and only 40,000 or so were found to be what society would call inventive. All of the rest were simply improvements. His definition of inventive was that the solution added to the entropy of all solutions without the need for a trade-off.
